As people who regularly sit on interview panels, its often surprising how badly prepared some fundraisers can be. In worse case scenarios, some candidates who would have been perfect for a role, lose the chance because their interview technique let them down.

Before heading out to meet a donor or sponsor, you might be well-advised to heed the words of Frederick Taylor Gates, one of the founders of the University of Chicago, who wrote the following memo on May 26, 1890. Working with Thomas W. Goodspeed, Gates succeeded in raising $400,000 to match the $600,000 gift of John D. Rockefeller which made possible the establishment of the university.

Like all fundraisers, I take great enjoyment from a successful fundraising activity. “Income ahead of target”, “costs less than expected”. These are phrases I like. However, and I appreciate I may be in a minority of one here, I actually find fundraising activities that don’t work even more fascinating.
